Some freewares (free softwares) I use and like to use (usually under WinXP). With the hope that they will allow some other people to save some money and time... (If some of the links are no longer updated, please send me a message :-) )

1. Office

  • Openoffice: the totally free rival of Microsoft Office (word, excel, powerpoint, access, ...) - fully compatible with and as powerful as the usual Microsoft Office softwares.
     
  • AbiWord: a free word processing program similar to Microsoft Word.
     
  • doPDF: a free PDF converter.
     
  • Foxit PDF Reader: small and fast PDF Reader (really much quicker than Adobe Reader).
     
  • KPlan: a very good and free calendar/diary/agenda (enables to attach e-documents of any type to dates and events); in English and French.

3. Pictures

  • XnView: to view, organise and convert graphics files (small and very fast).
     
  • Photo Story (Microsoft) (for WinXP): an easy way to make a great slideshow with your photos!

4. Multimedia

  • VLC Media Player: an excellent media player; multiplatform (for video-dvds : insensitive to regional codes!)
     
  • Media Player Classic: another very good and small media player.
     
  • FLVPlayer4Free: to play .flv files (flash video files).
      
  • RealPlayer: the last version (11) contains a very useful option to record radio streaming (Tip: to convert the recorded .ivr file to .mp3 file (with the free version), you just need to transfer it to your mobile devise).
     
  • Audacity: free audio recorder and editor (for instance to cut the beginning or the end of an audio track).
     
  • Audiograbber: cd-ripper and mp3 converter.
     
  • MusicMatch Jukebox: an easy way to convert a sound file in .mp3 (available with the free version)

5. Communication

  • Skype: to phone free or at a very cheap rate.

6. Security (Antivirus, Firewalls, ...)

  • Avira Antivir: excellent free antivirus software.
     
  • Zone Alarm: an excellent firewall : a free good version is available (link).
     
  • SpyBot: anti-spyware: detect and remove a multitude of adware files and modules from your computer.

7. Other Utilities

  • Cobian Backup: excellent backup software.
     
  • CCleaner: system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool; removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space.
     
  • Capturino: [in French only] Improved printscreen. Captures the contents of the screen. The captured screen can then be sent to the printer, or saved to disk as a file in jpeg. Can capture the entire Windows screen, the active window, or a specified area.
     
  • DosBox: an open source DOS emulator for BeOS, Linux, Mac OS X, OS/2, and Windows. Primarily focuses on running DOS Games.
     
  • JKDefrag: free disk defragmenter and optimizer for Windows.
     
  • NetMeter (Readerror): small, customizable network usage monitoring program.
     
  • SpeedFan: enable to control fan speeds according to system temperatures.
     
  • TUGzip: archiving utility for Windows that provides support for a wide range of compressed, encoded and disc-image files; supports ZIP, 7-ZIP, A, ACE, ARC, ARJ, BH, BZ2, CAB, CPIO, DEB, GCA, GZ, IMP, JAR, LHA (LZH), LIB, RAR, RPM, SQX, TAR, TGZ, TBZ, TAZ, YZ1 and ZOO archives.
     
  • Tweakmaster (Hagel): Internet Optimizer. Really speed up your Internet connection [not really free: 30 days evaluation version; but more than enough to use it efficiently]
     
  • Unlocker (by Cedrick Collomb): very useful explorer extension to delete, rename, move a file that is locked.
